When William 'Bill' Goodman died in 2002 little did his daughters know the extent of the memoirs he had been writing in the few years before his death. Bill's life, from joining the Raf in 1941 at the age of 18 to his demob in 1948, was fraught with adventure. He describes his service with 7 Squadron at Oakington; he then highlights the terrifying events of the night their Stirling was shot down over Holland, his subsequent incarceration at Stalag Luft 3, periods in other camps and, finally, the long debilitating march back home. All this with fascinating commentary, vivid description and the intimacy of his experience. The reader will meet his fellow airmen and Pows, the man who shot down their Stirling on that eventful night, the heroes of the Dutch resistance and, surprisingly, a kindly and caring guard in Stalag Luft 3! A fascinating first-hand account of a young man's wartime experience.

If I recall correctly, this book was published by Mr. Goodman's children after his death and so it was published "as is." There were some things that might have been polished had Mr. Goodman been part of the publishing process, but as it turned out to be posthumous, I think that publishing it as they were found was the right decision. My reasons for purchasing this book was two-fold, I have a deep interest in WWII history, and my grandfather served in the RAF and was killed when his plane (also a Short Stirling) was shot down in 1942. My mother, his daughter, was very young when he died and so we know very little about him. This book is a phenomenal historical record of the RAF and WWII. And for me personally, it gave me a glimpse of how things might have been for my grandfather.
Excellent book, it is an invaluable piece of history.

Of Stirlings and Stalags an airgunner tale WE 'Bill' Goodman 9781300705567 Books Reviews
I loved this book! I do like to read from time to time a good war book, and I prefer the autobiographical variant not the "embellished" one, and what a lovely surprise this book was!
I liked his innocent feelings for Monica, and his honesty in everything he did. Remarkable is the way he described the time spent in captivity, his warm feeling towards his country and his brave comrades are almost palpable; also I give him credit for being open and understanding towards the German guards situation, he sees them as simple soldiers who wanted just to go home and go on with their lives.
The parts where he writes about quotidian life are the best, and if I have anything to complain about that would be my regret he didn't tell us what happened with Monica his first love ?
All in all is good, the war events are clearly explained, and his view is important because he had been a witness plus an active character in the drama that unfolded.
I recommend this book for those interested in WW2 true story.
